Scared Stiff

I am going to start off by being completely honest, I LOVE TO SLEEP! Unfortunately, being a college student I don't  get to enjoy it as much as i would like to, but trust me if i could sleep all day i would.  Although most people may see this as being lazy and unproductive, I tend to see it as a biological necessity. Sleeping is the time where our body regenerates and helps save energy. It helps us conserve energy for inefficient times. When you have 3 exams one after another, trust me sleep is extremely necessary!

Nevertheless, i have heard of some stories where there are people who are scared of falling asleep. I have a friend who about a year ago called me telling me a horrible experience she had and i didn't believe her. It wasn't until i met several people who experienced the same thing did i begin to question it and started researching more about it.

My friend called me and began telling me how she woke up at the middle of the night and was scared to fall back to sleep. Apparently, she woke up and saw a black shadow in her room. It moved across the room and my friend had the desire to scream but said she couldn't. She said that she wasn't able to move at all and the only thing that did were her eyes. Scared stiff, (literally!) she frantically tried again to move her body. She said that when she realized that no matter what she did she couldn't move, she closed and squeezed her eyes shut. She said that when she reopened them the image was gone and she could move. People say that it was the "devil sitting on them."

When i began researching this, the closet thing that could explain it was Sleep Paralysis.
Sleep paralysis is when you feel conscious but you are unable to move. It can occur one of two times. Either when your falling asleep or wen you are waking up. The chances of sleep paralysis reoccurring more than once is very uncommon.

Above is a video of a doctor who explains what sleep paralysis exactly is. Then it follows by having people talk about their sleep paralysis experience. Its a scary thing! Especially when i've heard of people seeing this same black shadow. Which was probably why it took a while for me to believe it since ghost obviously dont exist. Sleep paralysis happens to alot of people and if you know of someone who has gone through a similar experience let them know that their arent alone. I just hope to god that i dont experience this. I like to sleep! Nevertheless, it good to learn about it and educate others. Continuous Sleep paralysis can even cause Narcolepsy another sleeping disorder. I have mentioned in my previous blogs how important our brain is. The more i learn about it is proves me right. We all sleep and it good to learn about situations where it might go wrong.

  1. WOW! I do not even know where to start. It is so scary because something similar happened to me. The exception was that my eyes were closed and it was not graphic (thank God!) I thought of it just as a bad dream, since the moment I opened my eyes nothing was there. See, I was asleep and suddenly I felt pressure on my back since I sleep facing down all the time, and I couldn't really breathe. The strange thing was that I also tried to move but I couldn't, and it was so frustrating to be honest, I also wanted to open my eyes but something told me not to, and that I should wait. Suddenly, I opened my eyes, and my room was pitch black. I immediately got my phone and got some light, checked, and there was nothing. I was still afraid because the dream had felt so real. Eventually I went back to sleep and the next day I knew exactly what had happened and when I would enter my room I would feel scared. Luckily, this only lasted for about 2 days. Ever since that day, I have never experienced the same event again. I am not sure we can call it sleep paralysis, since I did not see any shadows, my eyes were not open, and the moment I turned on the light there was nothing. I also did not hear any footsteps or anything, this just happened in the middle of my sleep. So, in a way it relates to some factors of sleep paralysis but it also just relates to a possible nightmare. Any other ideas? I think that the main description of sleep paralysis is being awake and being conscious and that did not happen to me at all.
I had no idea that sleep paralysis included sexual acts!! That is so disturbing. In the video, I could see the terror and pain in the first witness' eyes, Mark. I had heard of sleep paralysis but I had no idea that it would include moments like... well this. I would actually like to research more on this topic because it was so interesting! One feels like it only happens to us specifically, and little do we know that even people in Africa have their own term for sleep paralysis. Should we believe that actual bad energies or ghosts do exist? Interesting Post!

  2. what an awesome blog! I too was super scared when i had these experiences, and to be honest i sometimes go to bed praying that i never have to experience a sleep paraplysis again. I like many tend to get them; i think every three months. I was so relieved when reading this in the text, that it is not a supernatural thing! The first time i got one i was completely terrified and didn't have an idea of why i couldn't speak or move. In my head i was SCREAMING, " MOOOOOOOOM, MOOOOOOM!", but no one could here me. Sometimes i do find it hard to believe that its just a scientific thing, because out of my whole nuclear family I'm the only one the gets them!! Although, there is a pysioloigical explanation, I still believe in the supernatural, not exactly "the devil sitting on me" but more like a struggle between the spiritual realm. One night, was lifted off my bed and back on when i tried praying for a couple. Then again i dont know if i was dreaming or not but one thing i can tell you, is that, when i woke up, by body has the position of me being thrown. But I've never seen shadows or ghost when i get a sleep paralysis, (than God) but even though i know I'm safe, mentally i dont feel that way, and always subside to sleeping with my parents with the remainder of the night.
